The men of the Nigeria Police must have an axe to grind with our music celebs. Month after month, they keep disgracing our music stars, at times beating some of them black and blue. Muma Gee, Paul play, Peter of P-Square have all had their fair shares. The latest from them occurred on Wed, May 7th, 2008, when they harrased the rave of the moment, 9ice, beating him thoroughly. Their attack on 9ice happened at Bariga where he had gone to see his sick mother. According to him, the traffic was quite serious and they had some important stuff to attend to. On his way back from Bariga, three men and a woman suddenly double crossed him, and because they were all in mufti and the place was not a check point, he mistook them for robbers and sped off. Unknown to him, the police officers were pursuing him and when it was obvious to them that they couldn't get him, they started shooting at his tyres. Immediately the car stopped, all the officers started beating him with guns and police batons. They dragged him down from the car, tore his clothes and dragged him to one of the police stations in Bariga and put him behind the counter. Within a twinkle of an eye, a crowd gathered at the station immediately they heard 9ice had been arrested. The Lagos State Police PRO, Mr, Frank Mba, ordered his release and apologised to him. The excuse of the officers later was that they didn't recognise him as an artiste and also he did not stop when they told him to.

That not too 9ice but he should have stopped for the police. Even in America artistes go to jail for disobeying the law. NPF guns are painted in police colour for identification. He should count himself lucky that still have his life athelete Dele Udoh was not that lucky. Anyway I know he would make money out this in his next album  sorry all the same.

It is sad to see this type of thing happening on a daily basis in our Country. It makes you wonder if our policemen are truly give the requisite training for this huge responsibility many of them would simply like to refer to as a job. First of all, we cannot even think of blaming 9ice for not stopping for these guys cos they were in mufti. What if they were truly armed robbers? Speaking of recognising their weapons: Not all Nigerians are privy to this information about the colour of their guns, and even if we all were, how do you expect someone being accosted on the streets by a fast moving vehicle to start trying to make out the colours of the guns of his assailants? This is just not practical, and if he had the chance to even do that, it still doesn't mean they are policemen ( I have personally been robbed on the highway by people wearing mobile police uniforms).
This leads me to ask if our policemen are even trained to execute their duties without brutality? Should the punishment for not stopping for police marauders be the heavy application of gun butts and batons to all parts of one's anatomy? Should that not be a summary dismissal offence for Policemen? Let's even ask these guys why they stopped a lone occupant of a car just driving down the street while they were not at a checkpoint on stop and search operations. What was their mission and did the mission require a warrant or not?
This episode should not just be wished away, It should not be explained away, and it should not be swept under the carpet. It should be a matter for elaborate litigation, actions should be taken against the thugs that beat up 9ice to discourage other thugs parading themselves as policemen from doing this type of s**t again.
9ice, I am sorry this happened to you, and I ask you as a fellow citizen to pursue this matter to its conclusive legal end, so that we reduce the number of people that would ordinarily face this rubbish in their lifetime.

While am not holding  brief for the police because do do not worth that much, it is still safer to stop for them. If eve they were armed robbers most of times a robber is after valuables unless they are hire killers or the victim tried oversmartness. The bullet car travel faster than car on Lagos roads because the road is hardly free, so be on the safe said stop for police and pray they are not robbers if it turn out orderwise. Cooperate and give whatever may let you get away with your life/ My opinion.
